Smelling Anxiety Chemosignals Impairs Clinical Performance of Dental Students

Despite the fact that human body odors can transfer anxiety-related signals, the impact of such signals in real-life situations is scant. In this study, the effects of anxiety chemosignals on the performance of dental students operating on simulation …

The Effects of Emotional Visual Context on the Encoding and Retrieval of Body Odor Information

Conditions during information encoding and retrieval are known to influence the sensory material stored and its recapitulation. However, little is known about such processes in olfaction. Here, we capitalized on the uniqueness of body odors (BOs) …

In Sync or not in Sync? Illusory Body Ownership in Autism Spectrum Disorder

_Background_ A fundamental aspect of self-consciousness is body ownership, which refers to the experience that our body and its parts belong to us and it is distinct from those of other persons. Body ownership depends on the integration of different …

Promoting Cross-Culture Research on Moral Decision-Making with Standardized, Culturally-Equivalent Dilemmas The 4CONFiDe Set

_Introduction_ Moral dilemmas are a common tool in moral decision-making research. However, they are often hardly comparable across languages and cultures. Here, we propose a methodology to adapt, convert and test moral dilemmas in languages …

Relative Contribution of Odour Intensity and Valence to Moral Decisions

Meta-analytic evidence showed that the chemical senses affect moral decisions. However, how odours impact on morality is currently unclear. Through a set of three studies, we assess whether and how odour intensity biases moral choices (Study 1a), its …

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Social, sensory and motor aspects of ASD.

Body Odors

Humans communicate through body odors much more than what they think possible.

Social Behavior

Sociality has a crucial adaptive value. My research uses behavioral, perceptual, psychophysiological, neurophysiological techniques as tools to uncover the functions and mechanisms of human social function. Starting from perceptual illusions (see my work on the numbness illusion) and multisensory integration (see my work on the visuo-olfactory affective matching) to analyzing the olfactory impact of female intra-sexual competition, spanning from moral decisions to the development of political attitudes political attitudes my work focuses on understanding how we process social information and regulate dyadic behavior through sensory, cognitive, affective and motor information.

When Preschoolers Follow their Eyes and Older Children Follow their Noses: Visuo-Olfactory Social Affective Matching in Childhood

Recognition of emotional facial expressions is a crucial skill for adaptive behavior that most often occurs in a multi--sensory context. Affective matching tasks have been used across development to investigate how people integrate facial information …

You smell dangerous: Communicating Fight Responses Through Human Chemosignals of Aggression

The ability to detect conspecifics that represent a potential harm for an individual represents a high survival benefit. Humans communicate socially relevant information using all sensory modalities, including the chemosensory systems. In study 1, we …
